Renovating your wooden floors: the complete service

Z

The first assessment

We examine your floor closely and set out the options for the new surface you require. A showpiece in your home or building? A tough surface to withstand the pressure of visitors and customers? Or something that combines beauty with hard wear? We’ll give you a practical demonstration of the current restoration materials. Stains and sealants come in a bewildering choice – all with various advantages and implications for wear and the degree of aftercare they require. Each stage of the wood floor renovation process is fully costed, so you can tailor the package for your new surface to your requirement – and your budget.
Z

The big day arrives

We must work on a completely clear room. We can help by clearing heavy items of furniture and office equipment. We can also move or dispose of old carpets and floor coverings.

Z

The work begins

We secure any wobbly boards or blocks. And level off any uneven areas of floor.

Areas that are damged or have missing boards or blocks…? We’ll repair or replace with matching material from our sources of reclaimed timber.

Parquet blocks can be a challenge, as a great diversity were mass-produced during the parquet ‘boom’ from the 1930s to the 1970s. We’ll find the right match for your floors: or cut them down to size!

Any gaps may be left or, if you prefer, filled using a mixture of wood dust and resin.

Old features such as fireplaces and hearths?

We can remove these and fill in the space with fresh blocks.

Z

Sanding away:

The main stage in renovating wooden floors is to sand away all traces of old paint, oil, wax, varnish and lacquer – along with the muck and dust.

We use grades of paper to remove, level and smooth the surface until we get level and clean bare wood. Awkward corners and odd-shaped rooms benefit from handheld sanders – or, when necessary, using sandpaper by hand.

Z

A change of colour

The next stage is optional – to stain the bare wood.

A clear stain enhances the wood grain: a coloured one gives depth and a floor to match or contrast with your décor.

Take your choice: a bright modern look for kitchens and playrooms; a pale wash for bathrooms – or a darker shade for the more traditional look of wooden floors. Ask for our advice on the possibilities offered by different colours.

Coloured waxes and lacquers are available but we don’t recommend their use. Apart from the difficulty in ensuring an even colour, any damage to the surface will expose the underlying wood.

By performing staining and sealing in two distinct stages, the colour is not only easier to control – it holds its own as the sealant wear away.

Z

The essential protection

Your newly sanded and stained floor now needs sealing – to protect its fresh surface from the patter and clutter of over eager feet.

Sealants come in three main types;

Natural oil: giving the traditional look of a wooden floor.

Hardwax oil: for busier areas – harder wearing and penetrates the wood for a non glossy look.

Both sealants highlight the wood’s natural grain – bringing out its inherent colour.

Lacquer: a synthetic sealant for the hardest-pressure areas. Modern lacquers have a natural look (unlike the ‘plastic’ of old floor varnish), are water-based and safe for use around food, children and pets.

Z

After-care

Keep your new floor in great condition with modest attention. Our after-care advice on your particular sealant is a phone call away. Your floor is easy to clean by regular sweeping. Avoid vacuums with cylinder brushes as they can spread grit. Use a damp mop for light cleaning. And avoid excess moisture. Oil and wax floors will benefit from a light re-application in areas that have become worn. The surface of lacquered floors will benefit from a light sanding – and then a thinned ‘revive’ coat of sealant.
